Book your stay in Lucca
When the weather is nice, we strongly suggest you take a few hours to walk in peace along the city walls of Lucca, an open-air path that’s full of unique nature, which you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
Today they are considered the greatest example of modern fortification in Europe, but for us locals, the walls are much more than this.
The walls of Lucca were built during the Renaissance period, and encircle the city by more than four kilometres. Created for defensive purposes, the Bourbon Maria Luisa transformed them into a pedestrian pathway surrounded by greenery. Along the path you’ll find horse chestnuts, oaks, plane trees, limes and many other old trees.
That's why as soon as we have a free moment, we head to the walls for a walk, run, jog or ride a bike. This is our favourite green area, ideal for resting the mind and enjoying the view of Lucca from above.
The walls also host many cultural events, meetings, fairs and are really one of the nerve centres of the city. So if you want to experience Lucca like a real Lucchese, this is the place to start.
